Location:
Western Tanzania, along the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, near the town of Kigoma. The park lies about 20 kilometers north of Kigoma town and is accessible only by boat.
Overview:
Gombe Stream National Park, formerly known as Gombe Game Reserve, is one of Tanzania’s smallest yet most historically significant protected areas, covering about 52 square kilometers. It gained global fame through the groundbreaking chimpanzee research conducted by Dr. Jane Goodall, who began her studies here in 1960. The park’s lush forests, steep valleys, and sparkling lake waters make it an exceptional destination for primate enthusiasts, nature lovers, and researchers.
Key Attractions:
Chimpanzees: The main highlight of Gombe. Visitors can track habituated groups of wild chimpanzees — a rare and unforgettable experience.
Other Primates: The park is home to olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys.
Lake Tanganyika: The world’s longest and second-deepest freshwater lake, offering opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and scenic relaxation.
Scenic Landscapes: Steep hills, tropical forests, and streams running down to the lake create a breathtaking natural environment.
Jane Goodall Research Center: A historical site for primate conservation and behavioral studies.
Activities:
Chimpanzee trekking and primate watching
Hiking and nature walks through the forested hills
Bird watching (over 200 bird species recorded)
Swimming or boating on Lake Tanganyika
Cultural visits to nearby fishing villages
Visits to Jane Goodall research sites and memorials
Best Time to Visit:
The park is open year-round, but the dry season (June to October) offers the best trekking conditions. The wet season (November to May) provides lush scenery and active birdlife, though trails may be slippery.
Accessibility:
Accessible only by boat from Kigoma town (about 1–1.5 hours). Kigoma is reached by air, train, or road from Dar es Salaam or other major Tanzanian cities.
Accommodation:
Options include park rest houses, tented camps, and lodges in Kigoma. Limited camping facilities are also available near the park.
Special Note:
Gombe Stream National Park is a globally recognized center for primate research and conservation. Its intimate size and remote setting provide a peaceful and deeply personal wildlife experience ideal for eco-tourists, researchers, and those seeking a connection with nature’s most intelligent creatures.
