Overview:
Saadani National Park is Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary that borders the Indian Ocean, offering a rare combination of beach and bush in one destination. Covering approximately 1,100 square kilometers, Saadani provides visitors the unique experience of viewing wild animals relaxing on sandy beaches — where the blue ocean meets the African savannah. It is one of Tanzania’s most scenic and ecologically diverse parks, supporting both marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Key Attractions:
Beach and Wildlife Combination: The only place in East Africa where elephants, giraffes, and lions can be seen near the sea.
Wami River: A vital water source for hippos, crocodiles, and flocks of birds; riverboat safaris are a highlight.
Indian Ocean Coastline: Offers pristine beaches and nesting grounds for green sea turtles.
Zaraninge Forest: A coastal forest rich in biodiversity, including monkeys, bushbucks, and numerous bird species.
Historical Sites: Old Saadani town ruins and 19th-century trading remains reflect the region’s Swahili-Arab heritage.

Best Time to Visit:
The park is open all year, but the dry season (June to October) is best for game viewing and beach activities. The wet season (March to May) brings lush greenery and active birdlife.
Accessibility:
Saadani is accessible by road from Dar es Salaam (4–5 hours) via Bagamoyo or from Tanga (3–4 hours). Charter flights and boat transfers from Zanzibar are also available.
Accommodation:
Visitors can stay at beach lodges, tented camps, public campsites, or eco-lodges located both inside and near the park. Accommodation ranges from mid-range to luxury, often with sea views.
Special Note:
Saadani National Park offers a unique coastal safari experience, where one can enjoy game drives in the morning and relax by the ocean in the afternoon. It’s an ideal destination for travelers seeking both adventure and tranquility, blending Tanzania’s wildlife, culture, and coastline in one unforgettable setting.
